Medina and Central Market
The Medina of Rabat was founded in the seventeenth century and is one of the less visited by tourists in the country, allowing it to better retain its original charm. Besides the market, souk and lots of stalls and shops, the Medina hides inside the mosque, madrassa and hammam of Almoravid period.
The Hassan Tower is probably the icon or symbol of the city of Rabat, its best known monument. It dates back to the twelfth century, when Sultan Yaqub al-Mansur planned to build a huge mosque that after his death, was finally never made. What has remained today is the tower and a forest of columns, which gives it a special charm.
